Late this afternoon, I rode while watching The American President, a movie I enjoy very much. This came on the heels of a trip out of town Michelle and I made to Grand Rapids last night, to see a former student of mine who was involved in an outstanding theatrical performance (Pilgrim—The Musical). Since it was last night, we spent the night there, and came home today through freezing rain and rain that made the journey arduous.
This gave me a ride of 27.0 virtual miles in 1:52.

Although much of our "winter" has been exceptionally mild, and I was even able to do my first outdoor ride of the year last Tuesday, real wintry weather has moved in on us now. Yesterday Michelle had the day off from teaching due to severe icing, and her school is closed today, also.
I took the opportunity to enjoy a long ride on our stationary cycle while watching The Sound of Music.

For nearly 27 years, I have been meeting monthly with a small group of men at my former church, sharing our lives and discussing various books we have read. When we met Monday n night of this week, and discussed the excellent book Inspired by Rachel Held Evans (who died much too young, in 2019 at the age of 37), In our reading, I heard of the film Philomena, "a quiet Oscar winner from 2013 and one of my favorite faith-themed movies of all time." I had never previously heard of the movie nor seen it, so I watched it during my ride this morning.

After being absolutely beat yesterday and taking the day off, I was glad to get back to it today. I "needed" to ride inside, as now, at 1:40, it's 32° and windy outside (although a few years ago, there would have been no question about me riding outside). I rode while watching the baseball movie For Love of the Game, which has become a great favorite of mine in recent months.

I frequently take Sunday as a rest day. However, because I've not been able to ride since Wednesday, as Michelle and I went away for a little trip during her Midwinter Break (going to stay at a cozy Air BnB up in Bay City, right at the base of Michigan's 'thumb'), I was eager to get back to it today. So I rode to my favorite movie this afternoon, and reached my first big mileage milestone of the year (1000).
This gave me a ride of 24.7 virtual miles in 1:49.

Yesterday I did my first outdoor ride of the year, but today I was unable to extend that trend. Yesterday's ride revealed some issues with the brakes that had developed, and, not wanting to ride in an unsafe condition, I took the trike to the dealer (Jack's, in Dearborn) this morning.
The brake issues were fairly quickly resolved. However, I asked them also to check my chain, and their gauge showed it to be more than 100% worn. I asked about replacing it, and they said they'd be happy to, but couldn't have it ready today. Since Michelle and I are going on a small getaway for a couple of days, I told them to take their time with it, and I'd pick it up Monday. So, when I got home, I rode inside on our stationary cycle (which I probably would have done anyway today, due to our high winds -- an advisory, with gusts of 50 mph), while watching the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time, which was filmed on northern Michigan's Mackinac Island.
This gave me a ride of 23.7 virtual miles in 1:44.

Today I did my first outdoor ride of the year (and, in fact, the first one since November 17), going around the Platt/Packard Square (13.5 miles) in 1:42. Some rebuilding is clearly needed after the winter, however, as the challenge was significantly greater than I either remembered or expected.
I rode in 49° partial sunshine, very comfortably in a hoodie ... and enjoyed this evidence of global warming, as my first outdoor ride in 2022 didn't occur until my March 17 birthday.

After missing out on yesterday's glorious weather, I wanted so badly to ride outside today, and I popped out the door optimistically at 1:00 into brilliant sunshine. I could easily have dealt with the brisk 49° temperature ... but the 20 mph wind that was buffeting me from the west was another matter altogether. So I came back inside and rode while watching the movie Pretty Woman.

I cut myself a break today, and just did a short slow ride while watching the first hour of the 1974 film The Great Gatsby. (This one stars Robert Redford in the title role, as opposed to the 2012 version with Leonardo DiCaprio.)
I'm somewhat confused as to how I saw it, however. This far predated the ability to see movies at home, of course, but it was released on March 29, 1974 ... a time at which I was away in northern Michigan at my boarding school, the Interlochen Arts Academy, in my junior year of high school. I can only suppose that I must have seen it when I came home for spring break .... but that, too, presents a conundrum, as we lived 20 miles from any city and thus never went to movies. I have no memory of going to the theater to see it ... but I know that I did so, as it confirmed my having read F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel.
Anyway, this gave me a ride of 14.7 virtual miles.
